The water-retaining or viscosity-modifying admixtures are high molecular weight soluble polymers which in aqueous medium have increased viscosity because of their interaction with water. These compounds. Modify the rheology of concrete and increases the viscosity of the concrete mix, which help in reducing the segregation/bleeding parameters in cement paste or mortar and offers a stable cohesive mix.

In the case of SCC treated with VMAs, when the mix begins to flow, the force of the flow causes the VMA molecules to align in the same direction as the flow. This action allows the paste to lubricate the aggregates, reduce the tendency of aggregate interlocking, reduce internal friction and enhance flowability.²
